While a broken automatic door opener is a common repair, the fact that they “always” break down at the most inopportune times is what can send homeowners and business operators over the edge in the blink of an eye.

Sometimes it’s just a power outage or external damage, blown breaker or defective unit. Other times it’s a problem with the opener or another part of the garage door structure. So, if you need to get out in a hurry, try these super quick mini fixes-its first:

  • Make sure any hand bolts or locks are not in operation. The door won’t open if these locks are engaged. If the door still doesn’t budge, move on to the next step.
  • Turn off the power to the garage door opener by unplugging it. Sometimes a reboot is in order.
  • Next, find the release cord. It is usually a red handle or red cord hanging down from the center track.
  • After you locate the release cord, pull it to break the connection between the door from the opener. Bypassing it this way, you can lift the door open without using the automatic opener. You’ll be able to re-engage it later.
  • Lift the door straight up from the bottom at the center of the door. Once the door is above your head, the door's weight should slide it back onto the upper track. You can now move your car out of the garage.
  • Once your car is out of the garage, you can lower it manually. Make sure to engage any locks on the garage door.

    Subsequentially some garage doors have an emergency release built into the door. If your door has this feature, it will look like a key slot located at the top center of your door. You should have this key. Here is how this process works.

  • Turn the key then pull the entire lock mechanism toward you.
  • The tumbler key cylinder usually comes with an emergency release cord.
  • Pull the cord until you disconnect the motor.
  • Now you should be able to lift the door straight up from the bottom.
  • Once the door is above your head, it should be on the top section of the track. Now let go of the door and allow it to finish sliding into position.
